Josephine Baker, born in 1906, had an exceptional career as dancer and singer, and was renowned throughout the world for her skills and shows. Originally from the USA, she became French citizen and took an active part in the French Résistance during World War 2, using her fame to travel Europe without raising suspicion, gathering information at social events and smuggling documents and reconnaissance pictures. In the fifties and sixties she engaged in the Civil rights movements in the USA, fighting segregation and racism.
She died in 1975 and was laid to rest in Monaco, but on this November 30th France honoured her by symbolically reburying her in the Panthéon in Paris. She has joined a group of people who achieved great deeds in the French spirit, like Voltaire or Marie and Pierre Curie.
Well deserved, Jospehine, et merci!
